rolex key aIn order to obtain the certification issued by the Kew Observatory, who assessed Swiss timepieces by putting them under more stringent tests than COSC, Rolex created a new movement on the basis of the 700 calibre. This movement had several different mechanical components, one of which was the Guillaume balance wheel.
Kew Observatory controls followed the Royal Navy’s  rigorous standards for the greatest precision in nautical manoeuvres.  The tests, lasting 45 days, subjected movements to extreme changes in temperature; in spite of this, the Guillaume balance wheel emerged free of inaccuracies and acquired the inscription Patented Superbalance like the other Rolex movements.
145 models were produced under the supervision of Jean Matile, the same expert who in 1935 oversaw the production of the 500 Prince watches given the rating Especially Good by the Bienne Rating Office.
Of these models 136 were awarded the Kew A certification and 16 obtained a special mention of merit for an accuracy 20% above that required. It is very probable that the 9 watches not certified sustained small shocks during transport from Geneva to London.
The 136 certified calibres were mounted on Speedking models with reference 5056 (112) and Observatory models reference 6210 (24) with the inscription Kew A tested on the movement and the writing Kew A certificate on the dial above the seconds subdial.
